About

The Old Sports

Hello friends, Recently I've completed a few novels that I found somewhat complicated, and as I was pondering the symbolism and deeper meaning of the narrative I wished that I had a few like minded people to discuss the concepts that merited further exploration.

I expressed this to Katherine and suggested the idea of a book club, and she encouraged me to reach out to our extended group of friends. I propose a more or less monthly mid-week meeting here that offers us the chance to read a meaningful novel and then analyze our individual understandings. While we won't reject current works of fiction, initially I'd like to start with a list of modern classics, from the likes of Vonnegut, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, and Bradbury. In addition to the monthly novel, we may add a book or two as side reading that may delve deeper into philosophical realms, which may enhance the understanding of our primary novel- such as reading Camus' The Stranger as a pair to Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. Or sometimes just a fun popular novel to keep it interesting. We're open to all genres to keep it interesting and offer variety. While I'd prefer our main choice be a deeper, more philosophical novel I'm a big fan of page turners too, so bring on your hard boiled space crime dramas if you have a good one. I'd like to hear what you're reading and see what books you would suggest.
